CAMBODIA NOW HAS A HONORARY CONSUL GENERAL IN TURKEY
Istanbul, 09 November 2005 - Alphan Manas, Co-Chairman of Teknoloji Holding was appointed as Turkey's Honorary Consul General of Cambodia. In frame of this new task, Alphan Manas, will work in order to improve the commercial, social and cultural relationships between Cambodia and Turkey. Mr. Manas, was presented the Honorary Consul General notification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey,
To mark the celebration of the anniversary of the Independence of Cambodia, Mr. Manas hosted a reception with Ung Sean, Deputy Prime Minister and representative of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia, related national and international protocol representatives, and representatives of business and art world in attendance.
Mr. Manas, who gave a speech at this reception stated that he was proud and happy for this new task. Mr. Alphan Manas mentioned that foreign trade volume with Cambodia was around $ 20 million as of Y2004 and said that this figure can exceed $ 150 million within the next five years.
Mr. Manas pointed out that government mechanisms were solid in Cambodia and important projects that are realized with build-operate-transfer model especially in building, energy, transport and communication sectors were enabled with laws. Mr. Manas said that it will be wise to use the know-how advantage in favor of Turkey by switching inactive textile investments to Cambodia, where labor charges are lower by ¼ compared to China and consequently Cambodia can become the new manufacturing base for Turkey, as a rival for China. Mr. Manas, who noted that Cambodia was an interesting market for Turkish companies in terms of food, pharmaceutical and automotive subsidiary industries, said: There is a very limited commercial relationship between the two countries from the economic perspective. Private sector in Cambodia has just started to develop. There is huge potential for the private sector members. My duty is to pave the way for the businessmen and to increase their mobility in the country. Cambodia, with immense beaches that are suitable for tourism investments and of course the Angkor Wat, which is the 8 th wonder of the world, is an up and coming tourism center.
